III.                  OUTREACH INITIATIVES

The following outreach initiatives were completed by the SEU during the reporting period:

 

 

A. Internship Program: 

The employment unit conducts an active and on-going internship program giving training and “real world” experience in the broadcasting environment to area college students. 

 

1. During this reporting period, the spring program included one intern from Clayton State University and one intern from Georgia State University.

 

2. During this reporting period, the summer program included two interns from University of Georgia and one intern from Kennesaw State University. 

 

 

B. Management Training:

1. The Salem Director of Human Resources conducts monthly HR Network Training sessions via teleconference and Powerpoint presentations, which includes review of EEO policies and compliance. The SEU’s Office Manager participates in these training sessions each month and then routinely communicates with the SEU’s General Manager and other management team members to keep all employees apprised of the company and SEU’s policy on equal employment.

 

2. The SEU participates in an on-line program entitled “Employment Law Training” (E.L.T.), which is an ongoing program for all entry level managers and above to train them in methods of ensuring equal opportunity and preventing discrimination.  Training modules include two (2) hours of “Preventing Workplace Harassment” and a module covering all forms of anti-discrimination.  During this reporting period, one SEU employees participated in the ELT program.

 

 

C. Job Fairs:

During this reporting period the SEU participated in the job fairs listed below. At these events, SEU discussed the experience available at the college’s programs and the direction of the radio and broadcasting industry. SEU informed the attendees of job opportunities available. Applications were distributed and resumes were collected.

 

1. On May 19, 2011 the Business to Business Expo sponsored by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce held at Cobb Galleria Center was attended by the Account Manager/Program Sales Manager. 

 

2. On May 23, 2011 the Broadcasters’ Job Fair sponsored by Georgia Association of Broadcasters was held at the Tate Center at The University of Georgia and was attended by the Promotions Director, the Local Sales Manager and the Sales Coordinator.

 

3. On August 15, 2011 The Big Expo Career Fair sponsored by the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce held at Gwinnett Center, was attended by the Local Sales Manager. 

               

 

                D. Events sponsored by educational institutions related to broadcasting career opportunities:

During this reporting period the General Sales Manager for WFSH, WGKA, WNIV and WAFS served on the Board for Kennesaw State University’s Marketing and Sales department, in which opportunities in broadcasting and sales and marketing are discussed with students.

 

 

              E. Job Banks:

The employment unit participated in job banks and internet programs designed to provide general information about opportunities in broadcasting and to encourage women and minorities to consider future employment in broadcasting. In addition, all job openings have been posted on websites to ensure broad internet recruitment. During this reporting period the following job bank has been used: Georgia Association of Broadcasters.

 

        G. Other Initiatives:

Information about employment opportunities are displayed by the SEU at various community events the SEU attends.  Employment applications are made available for attendees to take.  During this reporting period, the SEU was at the following community events:

 

1. On October 3-8, 2011 Public Safety Appreciation Week, Cobb Galleria Center, Atlanta.

 

2. On October 25, 2011 “Give Our Schools A Hand,” Roswell Street Baptist Church, Atlanta.

 

3. On January 22, 2011 the WFSH Host attended the Girl Scout Mega Event in Forsyth County. The Host spoke about the broadcasting industry.

 

4. On December 5, 2010, the WFSH Host spoke to the Choir at Sunrise Baptist in Lawrenceville regarding opportunities in broadcasting. 

 

5. In October 2011 the WFSH Week End Announcer conducted a powerpoint presentation for Parent Night at Collins High School. Discussed student academic career preparedness in the broadcasting industry.
